The Breadwinner: Starvation or Survival - a Girl's Life Under Taliban Rule by Deborah Ellis
BATB score: 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Extremely painful and heartbreaking yet beautifully written and a pure masterpiece. Malala Yousafzai recommends this book - "I think it’s important for girls everywhere to learn how women are treated in some societies. The book reminds us how courageous and strong women are around the world.” Best for: all of us elites who are too privileged to acknowledge how privilege we are Best as: a good heart cry and/or a cleansing of our capitalistic greed. Yet

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and the Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi
BATB score: 6/10 🧕 recommended by Emma Watson aka Hermione Granger - an illustrated comic on an upbringing of Iranian women being 'worth half of men'. Best as: leisure yet knowledgeable read on Iran 1970s through war, martyrs, and head scarves via an autobiography of a curious and rebellious girl 🙎♀️ Best to: know that there's no climax nor key plot twist in this comic - just a series of chronological events Best for: admiration of the comic illustrations that told a story

Parvana's Journey by Deborah Ellis
BATB score: 8.5/10 🥺 Best to: know that it's about a 12-year-old Afghan girl traveling alone on foot, drinking from muddy streams, and eating pages of a book to survive #cry Best for: Deborah Ellis' fans - you must have read "The Breadwinner" prior to considering this sequel Best as: a reminder that escaping from the Taliban and trying not to die (eating grass), is the exact duck-up world we are living in right now 🦆 Would you have survived? All alone at 12-years-old? Havin

Mud City by Deborah Ellis
BATB score: 8.5/10 Best to: know that a child living in UNHCR refugee camp does not necessarily mean 'rescued' Best for: Deborah Ellis' fans - or collectors of Deborah Ellis books; best to have read "The Breadwinner" and "Parvana's Journey" prior to considering this book Best as: I wish that elementary school kids have Deborah Ellis books as required reading; 'Of Mice and Men' or 'To Kill a MockingBird' or 'Anne Frank' are great books. However, these are unrelatable today. I
